Angelo continued to search
the Internet for signs of Jarod. Mr. Raines initiated an
internal investigation to find out who was helping Jarod
from inside the Centre. The investigation team led by Miss
Parker followed Jarod's trail to Kender, Louisiana and
Marcentel's Fireworks. Jarod, using the name Nobel, had been
learning about building fireworks and explosives. Jarod
created a storied recreational explosive referred to as
"Big Bertha." The investigation to discover the
leak required Centre operatives to undergo a lie detector
test. Miss Parker admitted to having received a personal
message from Jarod in the form of a white rabbit as a
Christmas gift. Sydney's exam revealed he had secretly
contacted Jarod via a secure Internet connection and had
provided him with classified information, but as a way to
bring him back in. Lie detector test revealed Sydney had
lied about meeting Jarod in person, but Angelo did not
believe Sydney was the source of the leak. The exam of
Broots revealed some inconsistent replies, and he was put
under surveillance. Later it was discovered Broots lied to
the Centre about certain situations because he was in the
middle of a custody battle over his young daughter, Debbie.
Broots was temporarily cleared of suspicion. Angelo
continued to search for signs of Jarod on Internet, though
he has yet to discover anything specific.
Seventy-three "Mr. Potatoheads" (a polymorphous
children's toy of some renown) were found in Jarod's lair.
Psychological analysis remains inconclusive. Jarod's red
notebook discovered at site contained a picture of beautiful
woman and a clipping reading: "Photographer Injured in
Fax Bomber Explosion." The Centre's reconstruction
revealed that Jarod infiltrated the Detroit Bomb Squad to
investigate a series of blasts by the "Fax
Bomber." Jarod discovered that a member of the bomb
squad named Lester Carlson had been planting bombs around
the city so he could defuse them and garner praise as a
hero. Carlson had tried to place the blame on an awkward
loner named Curtis Haring. When Haring's house was bombed,
leaving him seriously injured, Jarod discovered that the
evidence pointed to Carlson as the bomber. According to
interrogations, Jarod uncovered the plot with the help of a
young woman photographer named Rachel Newton who had been
blinded in one of the blasts.
